What you will do
- Develop conceptual airframe architectures and parametric structural models for the fuselage, wing, tail, nacelles, rotor or proprotor pylons, and landing gear attachments.
- Size major structural components using classical analytical methods, cross-sectional analysis, and conceptual finite element modeling.
- Predict conceptual-level aeroelastic behavior, including flutter, whirl-flutter margins, and structural modal characteristics.
- Coordinate with vehicle, powertrain, and aerodynamic architects to define loads, outer mold lines, sizing cases, and aircraft packaging.
- Evaluate structural layouts and material choices for weight, manufacturability, cost, and schedule.
- Generate structural weight estimates and track weight margins through the concept phase.
Requirements
- Background in aircraft structural design at the conceptual or preliminary design level; rotorcraft, tiltrotor, or eVTOL experience is strongly preferred.
- Strong experience with aeroelastic analysis, including flutter and whirl-flutter prediction, and structural modal analysis.
- Experience with structural sizing, beam and panel analysis, weight-estimation relationships, and conceptual or preliminary aeroelastic tools.
- Working knowledge of composite and metallic airframe construction and their trade-offs.
- Strong Python programming skills for structural sizing and analysis automation.
- Experience with parametric aircraft geometry, systems integration, packaging constraints, and certification-driven civil aircraft structural requirements.
Nice to have
- Experience with the sectionproperties Python library or similar cross-sectional analysis tools.
- Experience with ASWING, NeoCASS, OpenAeroStruct, pyNastran, SUAVE, or similar tools.
- Experience with crashworthiness, redundancy, and occupant-protection requirements for civil aircraft.
