Machine Learning Engineer, AI Search - USDS

Location: San Jose, United States; fully in-person up to 5 days per week

Salary: $136,800–$359,720 annually, plus potential bonuses, incentives, and restricted stock units.

What you will do

• Develop, experiment with, analyze, and deploy large-scale personalized search and recommendation systems.
• Integrate large language models into recommendation pipelines for content understanding, user intent recognition, personalization, and content generation.
• Explore hybrid approaches combining LLMs with traditional recommendation systems to reduce feedback loops and identify new user interests.
• Advance generative recommendation systems that generate personalized content recommendations beyond traditional ranking methods.
• Collaborate with product managers, data scientists, infrastructure engineers, and operations teams to align search personalization with product goals.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s or advanced degree in Computer Science, Machine Learning, or a related field.
• Proficiency with machine learning frameworks such as TensorFlow or PyTorch and programming languages including Python, Java, or C++.
• Strong understanding of data structures and algorithms.
• At least 2 years of experience developing large-scale search or recommendation systems.
• Hands-on experience deploying and improving LLMs for real-world applications, including prompt engineering, supervised fine-tuning, reinforcement learning, and retrieval-augmented generation.
• Ability to work fully in person in San Jose up to 5 days per week.

Nice to have

• Experience with generative recommendation frameworks and large-scale applications.
• Experience working with international teams and diverse user behaviors.
• Open-source contributions related to search, recommendation, or NLP.
• Publications or contributions to NeurIPS, ICML, ACL, or RecSys.
