Machine Learning Engineer, E-Commerce - USDS (LLM)

Location: San Jose, United States; fully in-person schedule up to 5 days a week

Salary: $122,574–$259,200 annually, plus potential bonuses, incentives, and restricted stock units

What you will do

• Architect and develop LLM-based systems processing high-dimensional unstructured data from text, logs, conversations, and other sources.
• Design semantic understanding frameworks for fine-grained intent classification and entity extraction.
• Improve model performance through instruction tuning, RLHF/DPO, and contextual prompt engineering.
• Optimize production model serving with quantization, distillation, FlashAttention, and vLLM.
• Develop e-commerce video and product multimodal models for classification, video question answering, and cross-modal retrieval.

Requirements

• MS or PhD in Computer Science, AI, Mathematics, or a related field.
• At least 1 year of professional experience in machine learning, natural language processing, or computer vision.
• Proficiency in at least one of C++, Python, Go, or Java.
• Ability to work onsite in San Jose up to 5 days per week.

Nice to have

• Experience fine-tuning, distilling, or applying reinforcement learning to large language models for conversational AI.
• Experience with multilingual NLP, machine translation, or cross-lingual dialogue modeling.
• Understanding of e-commerce policies, dispute resolution workflows, and merchant-buyer interactions.
