What you will do
- Conduct pedestrian archaeological surveys, shovel testing, excavation, and data recovery.
- Identify and analyze historic and prehistoric artifacts and archaeological features.
- Complete field forms, photographs, excavation documentation, maps, and daily field notebook entries.
- Hike rugged terrain for 8–10 hours per day while carrying field equipment.
- Work under the direct supervision of the crew chief and Field Director while communicating effectively with the field team.
- Follow safe work practices and maintain professional ethical standards.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Archaeology, Anthropology, Architectural History, or a closely related field.
- Familiarity with archaeological field study design, documentation, and the regulatory framework for cultural resource management.
- Familiarity with GIS utilities and experience with Microsoft Office Suite.
- Availability for fieldwork and travel throughout Alaska during the May–October 2026 field season.
- Ability to work outdoors in varied weather, rugged terrain, extreme temperatures, dirt, dust, and loud noise.
- Ability to lift, push, or pull objects weighing up to 50 pounds.
Nice to have
- Previous archaeological field experience in survey, testing, or data recovery.
- Previous Alaska-based archaeological fieldwork experience.
- Experience with GIS processing and field tools.
