Fullstack Software Engineer (Python/React)

Location: Helsinki, hybrid; 3 days in the office per week

What you will do

• Build and maintain end-to-end features for the Kafka Ecosystem team, from API design and async Python backend services to React and TypeScript console views.
• Extend Karapace with schema compatibility logic, REST Proxy features, OpenAPI coverage, and Confluent API compatibility.
• Maintain the connector ecosystem, including Debezium, JDBC, S3, BigQuery, and OpenSearch sinks, covering upgrades, releases, security fixes, and changelogs.
• Write tested code, participate in design and code reviews, and contribute to technical planning and roadmap decisions.
• Ship changes through Buildkite and GitHub Actions CI/CD pipelines and investigate production issues across asynchronous Python applications and Linux systems.
• Use AI coding tools such as Claude Code to automate repetitive processes and build AI-assisted workflows.

Requirements

• Strong production Python skills, including async/await, event loop semantics, type annotations, and testing.
• Confident contribution to React and TypeScript codebases, with the ability to deliver features across backend and frontend.
• Understanding of distributed systems fundamentals, including consistency, replication, and failure modes.
• Familiarity with Avro, JSON Schema, or Protobuf and schema compatibility concepts.
• Linux fundamentals, including process management and OS-level debugging.
• Fluent written and verbal English; hybrid work in Helsinki with 3 office days per week.

Nice to have

• Apache Kafka, Kafka Connect, connector development, or schema registry experience.
• Open-source contributions and working Java knowledge.
• Experience with AWS, GCP, Azure, cloud-managed Kafka, or other cloud-native distributed systems.
• Experience with distributed tracing, Prometheus metrics, or structured logging.
