Principal Backend Software Engineer (Java)

Location: Remote, with eligible candidates for this role from any location in Australia and New Zealand; sufficient timezone overlap with the team is required.

What you will do

• Tackle large and complex engineering problems from technical design through launch.
• Deliver backend solutions used by other engineering teams and products.
• Define plans and technical approaches for large projects.
• Address architecture challenges and apply architectural standards to new projects.
• Lead meaningful code reviews, documentation, and complex fixes for high-risk problems.
• Partner across Engineering teams on company-wide initiatives and mentor more junior engineers.

Requirements

• 10+ years of experience in hands-on software or technology leadership roles with end-to-end software development lifecycle responsibility.
• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree, preferably in Computer Science, or equivalent experience.
• Expertise in Java, Python, Kotlin, Go, or Scala, with proficiency in Java or Node.js and experience with at least one additional language.
• Hands-on experience with public cloud offerings such as AWS, GCP, or Azure and understanding of SaaS, PaaS, or IaaS.
• Experience with Developer Experience or Developer Productivity, CI, and CD.
• Experience mentoring engineers, influencing decision makers, and considering customer impact in technical decisions.
