Lead Data Engineer (Gaming)

Location: Sydney, Australia; hybrid with 3 days per week in the Sydney head office for Sydney-based employees

What you will do

• Build a greenfield real-time event-streaming platform using Kafka, Flink, and ClickHouse for segmentation and targeting at scale.
• Set the technical direction for the data platform as products and data volumes grow.
• Own warehouse datasets and end-to-end transformations in BigQuery, dbt, SQL, and Python.
• Define data quality, testing, monitoring, and observability standards across streaming and batch systems.
• Optimize systems for cost and latency while handling event data at billions-of-rows scale.
• Improve engineering practices through code reviews, mentoring, architecture patterns, and AI-assisted tooling.

Requirements

• Strong hands-on data engineering fundamentals across pipelines, data modelling, correctness, scale, and failure modes.
• Production experience with SQL and Python, end-to-end data pipelines, dbt, an orchestrator, and a cloud data warehouse.
• Experience designing and scaling production data systems and working with event data at billions-of-rows scale.
• Experience with AWS or GCP and infrastructure-as-code.
• Strong data quality and observability practices, including testing, monitoring, and alerting.
• Experience setting technical direction, making architecture decisions, mentoring senior engineers, and communicating trade-offs to non-technical stakeholders.

Nice to have

• Production streaming experience with Kafka and Flink, ideally with an OLAP store such as ClickHouse.
• Background in gaming, adtech, or martech event data.
• Experience using AI to improve individual and team productivity.
