TL;DR
Optomechanical Engineer (Aerospace): Designing and building precision optomechanical structures, optical benches, mirror mounts, lens cells, and support hardware for high-power satellites with an accent on mechanical design, optical alignment, structural performance, and thermal stability. Focus on developing, testing, qualifying, and integrating flight hardware while solving jitter, mount-induced deformation, alignment, and wavefront stability challenges across launch and on-orbit operation.

Location: Los Angeles, CA, United States. The role involves access to ITAR-controlled information and requires U.S. person status or eligibility for a federally issued export control license.

Base salary: $120,000–$210,000 per year, plus equity.

What you will do

  • Design optomechanical assemblies, including optical benches, mirror mounts, lens cells, and support structures, from concept through qualification and on-orbit operations.
  • Develop mounting and alignment schemes for lenses and mirrors using kinematic and semi-kinematic mounts, flexures, and bonded interfaces.
  • Design mirror support structures for jitter, dynamic stability, mount-induced deformation, and thermal stability.
  • Own optical alignment and stability budgets and translate wavefront and pointing decisions into mechanical requirements.
  • Lead design reviews and drive hardware development through assembly, alignment, vibration, thermal-vacuum, modal testing, analysis correlation, and iteration.
  • Collaborate with optical, thermal, structural, GNC, metrology, and manufacturing engineering teams on requirements, processes, deliverables, and schedules.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in mechanical, aerospace, optical, or another relevant engineering discipline.
  • At least 2 years of experience in mechanics-focused mechanical or optomechanical design and analysis.
  • Proficiency with 3D CAD software for detailed part and assembly design.
  • Hands-on experience mounting lenses and mirrors and designing the structures that support them.
  • Must be a U.S. person under ITAR or otherwise eligible for a federally issued export control license.

Nice to have

  • Siemens NX, STOP analysis, and experience closing pointing or wavefront error budgets.
  • Experience designing, building, and testing aerospace optomechanical or opto-structural hardware.
  • Experience with flexures, optical bonding, kinematic mounts, FEA, structural dynamics, and thermal-elastic analysis.
  • Practical experience with GD&T and tolerancing of precision optical interfaces.
  • Ability to design, build, align, test, troubleshoot, and iterate hardware independently.
