Senior Frontend Engineer, Media

Location: Remote - United States

Base salary: $190,000–$267,000 USD per year, plus potential equity and, depending on the position, commission.

What you will do

• Define and build technical components for Reddit’s video and audio web experience.
• Develop and optimize the web media player using React and TypeScript.
• Design and implement backend APIs in Go and Python that power media experiences.
• Deliver features across the full development cycle, including technical design, development, testing, experimentation, analysis, and launch.
• Collaborate with product, design, client engineering, and platform engineering teams to improve media performance.
• Review code, design documents, product specifications, and mocks while mentoring junior engineers.

Requirements

• At least 5 years of professional software development experience in one or more general-purpose programming languages.
• Strong proficiency in JavaScript, React, Next.js, and TypeScript, with experience building scalable web applications from complex UI/UX designs.
• Experience designing maintainable APIs and working with GraphQL, REST, HTTP, gRPC, and basic Thrift.
• Strong organizational, prioritization, communication, and cross-functional collaboration skills.
• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or a related technical field, or equivalent practical experience.
• Must be based in the United States for this remote role.

Nice to have

• Product thinking that connects media streaming metrics such as QoE and buffering rates with user-facing features.
• Experience with HLS, MPEG-DASH, MP4, video compression standards, and modern streaming technologies.
• Knowledge of H.264, H.265/HEVC, VP9, and AV1.
• Familiarity with background data fetching and current video compression research.
