Communications Officer (Tonga)

Location: Onsite at the Ministry of Internal Affairs in Nuku’alofa, Tonga, with travel to Vava’u, Ha’apai and ‘Eua as required

What you will do

• Develop communication plans and produce accurate content for social media, print, radio, television and other media outlets.
• Manage and update websites, social media and other digital platforms.
• Prepare press releases, statements and public messages supporting labour mobility activities in Tonga.
• Work with monitoring, reporting and evaluation colleagues on stories of change and visibility materials.
• Build relationships with government, development, media and labour mobility stakeholders.
• Provide advice, updates and reports on urgent, sensitive and complex communication matters.

Requirements

• Degree in communications, journalism or a related field, and/or at least three years of communications experience.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills with government, media, community and development stakeholders.
• Fluency in English and Tongan is required.
• Initiative, sound judgement, strong organisation and the ability to manage competing priorities and tight deadlines.
• Confidence using Microsoft Office, email, internet tools, social media and basic content management processes.
• Understanding of gender equality, disability and social inclusion, with a commitment to respectful cross-cultural communication.

Nice to have

• Experience in communications, journalism, media, public relations, stakeholder engagement or development programs.
• Understanding of Tonga’s labour mobility context.
