Background Investigator / Analyst (Cybersecurity)

Location: Remote within the United States

Salary: $118,400–$177,600 annually, depending on US geographic pay tier; performance incentives or bonuses and equity may also apply.

What you will do

• Conduct background investigations from intake through final reporting using OSINT and commercial investigative tools.
• Verify the accuracy, completeness, reliability, and credibility of information from available sources.
• Perform quantitative personnel risk analysis using consistent and repeatable methodologies.
• Partner with HR, Legal, and Information Security to identify, triage, and mitigate personnel security risks.
• Handle sensitive personal data discreetly and escalate high-risk or ambiguous findings to leadership.
• Refine investigative methodologies, risk-scoring models, research procedures, and reporting standards.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice, Criminology, Psychology, Intelligence Studies, or a related field, or equivalent experience.
• 3–5 years of experience in background investigations, due diligence, employment screening, corporate investigations, intelligence analysis, or related work, particularly involving US-based individuals or organizations.
• Experience with investigative research databases and commercial research platforms.
• Strong written communication skills for producing concise risk assessments and investigative dossiers.
• Understanding of privacy regulations and ethical standards governing background investigations and employment screening.
• Strong attention to detail, discretion, judgment, and documentation skills when handling confidential or adverse information.

Nice to have

• Experience with OSINT techniques and tools for investigating individuals and corporate entities.
• Familiarity with insider threat frameworks, indicators of compromise, personnel security concepts, NISPOM, SEAD guidelines, or FCL environments.
• Knowledge of foreign influence risk factors, ITAR/EAR export controls, or corporate IP protection.
• Corporate security, information security, or risk management experience.
• CBI, PBSA, FCRA, or CFE certification.
