TL;DR
Senior Flight Software Engineer (Embedded C/C++): Architecting and delivering flight software for current spacecraft missions, autonomous satellite constellations, and embedded hardware products with an accent on constrained microcontrollers, spacecraft autonomy, and fault management. Focus on designing portable real-time software, building regression-testing frameworks, and solving reliability challenges across avionics, communications, propulsion, and satellite operations.

Location: Auckland, New Zealand. New Zealand roles require background and nationality checks for access to ITAR-regulated equipment and data; eligibility may depend on citizenship of Australia, Japan, New Zealand, Switzerland, the European Union, or a NATO country, subject to restrictions on dual citizenship.

Company

hirify.global is an end-to-end aerospace company building rockets, spacecraft, satellites, and critical space-system subsystems.

What you will do

  • Architect flight software with avionics, systems, GNC, operations, and other subject-matter experts.
  • Support anomaly resolution and sustaining engineering for current missions in development and on orbit.
  • Develop next-generation flight software for large autonomous satellite constellations, including C&DH, GNC/ACS, FDIR, mode management, telemetry, payload orchestration, and autonomy.
  • Develop embedded software for thrusters, reaction wheels, radios, star trackers, IMUs, power systems, battery management, and valve drives.
  • Perform system trade studies, assess conceptual designs, and define integrated solutions, margins, and performance parameters.
  • Build and maintain regression-testing frameworks for flight software and embedded product releases.

Requirements

  • Tertiary qualification in Software Engineering, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or a related field.
  • At least 5 years of professional experience in a relevant discipline.
  • Experience with 32-bit Arm Cortex-M microcontrollers, including Cortex-M4/M7, and development for memory- and code-space-constrained targets.
  • Strong C/C++ microcontroller programming experience, including real-time operating systems and device-driver development.
  • Experience with embedded communication interfaces such as CAN 2.0/FD, SPI, and RS-422.
  • Experience working from datasheets and schematics with electrical, systems, and test engineers; strong problem-solving, planning, and technical communication skills.

Nice to have

  • Rust, Robot Framework, UDP/TCP networking, bootloaders, or network programming.
  • Experience with propulsion systems, FPGA technology, CI/CD using GitLab or TeamCity, Docker/Kubernetes, Node/NPM tooling, or Elasticsearch.

Culture & Benefits

  • Work on real spacecraft, rockets, and satellite hardware supporting commercial, government, and defense missions.
  • Collaborate across multidisciplinary engineering, design, test, and operations teams.
  • Operate in a fast-paced environment focused on innovation, teamwork, tight deadlines, and delivery.
  • Background checks are completed before employment offers for New Zealand office roles.
