TL;DR
Flight Software Lead (C/C++): Leading development of real-time flight software for VLEO spacecraft, including control flows, autonomy, mode management, FDIR, and core flight applications with an accent on deterministic embedded systems, hardware integration, and end-to-end verification. Focus on designing fault-tolerant spacecraft behavior, validating software through simulation and HIL testing, and delivering secure updates from code review through launch and on-orbit operations.

Location: Reading (London), United Kingdom; hybrid setup with one dedicated remote day per week. Relocation support and visa sponsorship are available for candidates joining from abroad.

Company

hirify.global Space develops very-low-Earth-orbit satellites operating at approximately 200 km to advance global connectivity and insight.

What you will do

  • Lead, recruit, coach, and direct the flight software engineering team.
  • Own the onboard flight software stack, designing and testing real-time C/C++ software on RTOS or Embedded Linux.
  • Define interfaces and integrate spacecraft subsystems through I2C, SPI, UART, CAN-FD, GPIO, and SpaceWire.
  • Implement spacecraft behaviors, mode management, sequencing, autonomy, and fault detection, isolation, and recovery.
  • Build simulation, SIL/HIL, verification, telemetry analysis, CI/CD, and observability infrastructure.
  • Support integration, launch operations, on-orbit operations, and secure over-the-air updates.

Requirements

  • 5+ years of spacecraft flight software development experience, including leadership of engineers delivering flight software.
  • Production embedded or real-time systems experience in C/C++ and/or Rust on RTOS or Embedded Linux.
  • Strong knowledge of scheduling, interrupts, concurrency, determinism, and constrained CPU and memory management.
  • Experience with unit and integration testing, simulation-first development, HIL validation, and disciplined debugging.
  • Hands-on hardware integration and lab debugging using common spacecraft interfaces.
  • Experience with software architecture, code review, static analysis, CI/CD, configuration management, and observability.

Nice to have

  • Experience with spacecraft flight software frameworks such as cFS or F´.
  • Knowledge of autonomy, fault management, radiation and SEU mitigation, watchdogs, redundancy, and safe-mode design.
  • GNC/AOCS-adjacent experience, including sensor and actuator pipelines, control-loop integration, estimation, filters, and timing analysis.
  • Digital-twin, simulator, SIL/HIL, or on-orbit operations experience.

Culture & Benefits

  • Work on ion propulsion technology and a ULEO satellite platform.
  • Ownership of the full satellite technology lifecycle.
  • Competitive salary and equity participation.
  • Private health insurance with dental and optical coverage, plus annual healthcare check-ups.
  • Hybrid work arrangement with one dedicated remote day per week.
  • Visa sponsorship and relocation support for candidates joining from abroad.
