TL;DR
Senior Mechanical Engineer - Atlas (Robotics): Designing external robot structures, including covers and padded shells, with an accent on safety, durability, manufacturability, serviceability, and complex materials and geometries. Focus on creating and validating CAD-based designs, developing production-ready components, and solving mechanical issues across the Atlas robot from prototyping through production.
Location: Waltham, Massachusetts, United States. Must be eligible to work in the United States; visa sponsorship is not available.
Base pay: $88,000–$120,000 annually.

What you will do
- Design Atlas’s external structures, including covers, padded shells, and other components with complex surfaces and geometry.
- Balance safety, durability, aesthetics, assembly, serviceability, scalability, and production constraints.
- Create CAD models, drawings, specifications, assembly documentation, and test plans using tools such as CATIA, NX, or SolidWorks.
- Develop concepts, perform engineering analysis and testing, build prototypes, and support designs through production.
- Troubleshoot issues, identify root causes, and implement corrective and preventative solutions.
- Collaborate with mechanical engineering, industrial design, suppliers, program leaders, and external vendors.
Requirements
- B.S. in Mechanical Engineering or a related field.
- 2+ years of experience designing components and systems for robotics, consumer or commercial products, industrial equipment, or a related field.
- Experience with production-friendly designs, structural components, flexures, compliant energy-absorbing structures, and prototyping.
- Ability to design for plastics, foam, rubber, and other compliant materials and manufacturing methods.
- Ability to optimize designs using hand calculations, FEA, CFD, and detailed testing.
- Experience producing detailed drawings according to ASME standards, including GD&T and Y14.5-2018.

- M.S. in Mechanical Engineering or a related field.
