Principal Engineer (AI)

Location: Cambridge, Massachusetts, United States — on-site

Salary: $300,000–$500,000 total compensation, including base salary and equity.

What you will do

• Own mission-critical, production-grade backend systems used by enterprise customers.
• Design, ship, and steward high-impact features that improve reliability, scalability, performance, and customer value.
• Identify and resolve technical bottlenecks limiting product quality and engineering velocity.
• Design, operate, and evolve LLM validation loops covering evaluation, feedback, regression testing, and failure analysis.
• Build systems combining graph, vector, and traditional data models for reasoning over complex domains.
• Raise engineering quality and durability standards through hands-on technical leadership without direct reports.

Requirements

• Prior Principal Engineer or Staff+ experience in a highly technical environment.
• Deep hands-on expertise across backend, frontend, infrastructure, and AI systems.
• Strong Python expertise, backend frameworks, microservices, REST or gRPC, and supporting experience with Node.js and JavaScript.
• GCP is mandatory, plus expert experience with at least one of AWS or Azure; expert-level Kubernetes and Terraform experience.
• Experience operating reliable production systems and working with SQL, NoSQL, graph databases such as Neo4j, and vector databases or embeddings infrastructure.
• Experience building and operating LLM-powered systems, including validation loops and tracing or evaluation tools such as LangSmith.

• Experience with OpenAI, Anthropic, or similar model vendors.
