Backend Engineer (Java)

Location: Riga, Latvia; hybrid flexibility with office and work-from-home options. Up to three months per year may be spent working from another country.

Salary: €4,400–€4,800 per month, plus stock options.

What you will do

• Deliver backend features and external integrations from specification through deployment, monitoring, and production operation.
• Build reliable message-driven processing with at-least-once delivery, deduplication, retries with backoff, and circuit breaking.
• Design and develop Java services using clean and hexagonal architecture.
• Write automated tests and maintain architecture rules, static analysis, and consistent code quality.
• Contribute to RFCs, review technical designs, and document contracts, integrations, and architectural decisions.
• Collaborate with engineers, product owners, and cross-functional teams to solve investor-facing problems.

Requirements

• Production experience building backend services with modern Java and Spring Boot.
• Understanding of message-driven systems, RabbitMQ or Kafka, delivery semantics, idempotency, and dead-letter handling.
• Strong SQL skills with relational databases such as PostgreSQL and experience with schema migrations.
• Experience with layered or hexagonal architecture and framework-independent domain logic.
• Experience with test-driven development, CI/CD, Docker, Git, and containerized deployments.
• Fluent Latvian and good written and spoken English are required.

Nice to have

• Experience with Braze, Iterable, or similar customer engagement and marketing automation platforms.
• Experience implementing timeouts, retries, backoff, and circuit breakers for third-party integrations.
• Knowledge of structured logging, metrics, tracing, CloudWatch, or OpenTelemetry.
• Experience with ArchUnit, Spock, or contract-first API development.
