Backend Software Engineer (Node.js)

Location: Remote within the UK; monthly in-person engineering meet-ups and an optional London co-working space.

Salary: £50,000–£80,000 DOE

An insurance technology company building a telematics-based auto insurance underwriting platform using real-world driving data and proprietary machine learning models.

What you will do

• Design, build, and maintain scalable backend services with Node.js and TypeScript.
• Develop production-grade APIs and services for the insurance platform, mobile applications, and third-party integrations.
• Contribute to system architecture and long-term engineering strategy.
• Collaborate with Product, Design, and Engineering to deliver high-quality features.
• Own service reliability, scalability, observability, and performance improvements.
• Participate in on-call support.

Requirements

• Commercial backend development experience with Node.js.
• Strong JavaScript and/or TypeScript experience.
• Understanding of software architecture and distributed systems.
• Experience designing and building production-grade APIs.
• Strong problem-solving skills and computer science fundamentals.
• Clear communication with technical and non-technical stakeholders and experience in Agile environments.

Nice to have

• Experience with Google Cloud Platform, GraphQL, event-driven architectures, Terraform, or DataDog.
• Knowledge of Domain-Driven Design and Hexagonal Architecture.
• Experience in startup or scale-up engineering environments.
