TL;DR
Associate Concept Artist (Merchandise): Developing character-led merchandise concepts and production-ready artwork for apparel, collectibles, accessories, and other fan products with an accent on ideation, character accuracy, surface design, and commercial appeal. Focus on creating multiple concept directions, refining approved designs, preparing layered vendor files, and resolving artwork issues through production.

Location: Onsite in Austin, Texas. Relocation assistance is available for candidates moving from outside Austin.

What you will do

  • Develop research, mood boards, product sketches, and concept directions for assigned merchandise collections.
  • Explore product silhouettes, character applications, poses, expressions, patterns, graphics, materials, functions, and interactive features.
  • Translate approved concepts into polished illustrations, placement graphics, patterns, icons, colorways, and surface designs.
  • Prepare correctly sized, scaled, formatted, and layered artwork files for product categories and vendor handoff.
  • Incorporate feedback from Brand, Licensing, Production, Marketing, E-commerce, and creative leadership.
  • Review vendor proofs, identify deviations from approved artwork, correct routine issues, and present design rationale.

Requirements

  • 2–4 years of experience in merchandise, consumer product, or character-based design.
  • Portfolio showing research, ideation, concept development, and finished production-ready artwork.
  • Strong Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop skills, including pattern, icon, and surface design.
  • Strong character drawing fundamentals with accurate proportion, expression, and consistency.
  • Working knowledge of brand and character style guides, licensed product requirements, and production workflows.
  • Ability to manage concurrent assignments, meet development deadlines, communicate commercial rationale, and maintain organized files and version control.

Nice to have

  • Experience with plush, collectibles, apparel, accessories, stationery, or home décor.
  • Experience working with overseas vendors and reviewing proofs, samples, or digital renderings.
  • Familiarity with creator-led brands, fandom-driven products, or licensed entertainment merchandise.
  • Curiosity about the Aphmau universe and strong attention to story accuracy.
