Senior Editor, Policy, Politics, and Ideas

Location: New York, NY, or Washington, D.C.; this is an office-based position.

Salary: $120,000–$150,000 USD

What you will do

• Lead and manage a team of 3–4 reporters, assigning, developing, and editing fast-turn analysis and long-form features.
• Set editorial direction for political coverage, identifying distinctive angles and major emerging storylines.
• Shape rigorous stories and coverage plans aligned with editorial strategy and audience goals.
• Collaborate with senior politics and policy editors, the executive editor, and editors across the newsroom.
• Expand political journalism across audio, video, social video, and newsletters.
• Connect editorial coverage with Vox’s broader audience, membership, and platform strategy.

Requirements

• Five or more years of editing experience.
• Strong leadership, management, communication, and editing skills.
• Excellent news judgment and the ability to develop sharp analytical angles.
• Analytical rigor, including the ability to pressure-test arguments and engage seriously with opposing views.
• Ability to edit explanatory journalism and intellectual claims with nuance and clarity.
• Passion for making complex concepts accessible through explanatory journalism.
