Technical Specialist - Advanced Seat Structures

Location: Warren, Michigan, United States; hybrid with on-site work at the Warren Tech Center at least three days per week. Travel required: less than 25%. This role is not eligible for relocation assistance; relocation costs are the candidate’s responsibility.

What you will do

• Lead clean-sheet development of advanced front and rear seat structure architectures from concept through hand-off to execution teams.
• Translate vehicle-level targets into seat structure layouts, mechanisms, interfaces, and reusable architecture strategies.
• Use CAE, packaging, kinematic, structural, stiffness, modal, and occupant-comfort studies to evaluate concepts and guide design decisions.
• Lead global benchmarking and collaborate with JIT suppliers and GM R&D to evaluate and prototype new structures, mechanisms, materials, and technologies.
• Define structural targets and validation strategies for whiplash, rear-impact, ABTS, seat-belt, and buckle integration requirements.
• Partner with AVD, Design, BIW, Safety, Manufacturing Engineering, plants, suppliers, and regional engineering teams to prepare concepts for production execution.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related engineering discipline.
• At least 7 years of post-graduation engineering experience, including significant experience with automotive seat structures or closely related structural systems.
• Experience developing seat structures from concept through launch, including supplier collaboration and plant support.
• Deep knowledge of seat-to-vehicle packaging, occupant ergonomics, structural integration with BIW and floor systems, and global seating safety and regulatory requirements.
• Proficiency in structural analysis, including FEA and modal or rigid-bed analysis, with the ability to convert CAE and test results into design recommendations.
• Ability to independently solve complex, ambiguous technical problems, prepare cost/mass/investment trade studies, and influence cross-functional teams without direct people leadership.

Nice to have

• Master’s degree in Mechanical, Structural, or a closely related engineering discipline.
• 10+ years of engineering experience, including advanced vehicle development or advanced structure and mechanism work.
• Experience with composite or other lightweight structural materials and related manufacturing processes.
• DFSS Black Belt, Red X, or comparable advanced problem-solving certification.
• Experience with highly automated manufacturing strategies and familiarity with GM engineering processes and GVDP.
