Software Engineer (Cassandra)

Location: United States; Morrisville, North Carolina, United States. Hybrid working environment with in-office and/or in-person expectations.

Salary: 170,000–253,000 USD annual OTE, including potential commission.

What you will do

• Design and implement Java-based Cassandra features and improvements for StorageGRID with end-to-end ownership.
• Translate product, scale, upgrade, supportability, and customer requirements into Cassandra designs.
• Debug issues involving storage, compaction, repair, replication, consistency, node lifecycle, and cluster behavior.
• Contribute to Cassandra and StorageGRID architecture reviews, observability, upgradeability, and operational improvements.
• Lead performance analysis, benchmarking, capacity planning, and tuning for large-scale deployments.
• Drive medium-to-large initiatives from design through implementation, validation, and release readiness while collaborating with engineering, QA, product, supportability, support, and field teams.

Requirements

• 8–12 years of experience in backend, systems, database, storage, or distributed systems engineering.
• Strong Java programming skills; experience with distributed databases such as Apache Cassandra or comparable NoSQL systems.
• Understanding of replication, consistency, partitioning, failure handling, node lifecycle, and cluster coordination.
• Experience designing and debugging complex software in Linux-based, scale-out, or storage-oriented environments.
• Practical knowledge of open-source development, code reviews, design discussions, testing, and community collaboration.
• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.

Nice to have

• Deep knowledge of Cassandra internals, including the storage engine, compaction, repair, indexing, schema evolution, upgrades, or release management.
• Experience integrating distributed databases into enterprise storage, object storage, cloud, or scale-out infrastructure products.
• Experience with performance optimization, benchmarking, observability, and production troubleshooting at scale.
• Familiarity with StorageGRID, object storage, S3, Kubernetes, containerized services, CI/CD pipelines, and AI-assisted development tools.
