TL;DR
Backend Engineer (Kotlin): Developing the core of a new storytelling app and REST APIs with an accent on personalized print products and JVM scalability. Focus on designing new features, optimizing data flow between SQL/NoSQL databases, and migrating from monolith to microservices.
Location: Hybrid in Vienna, Austria. Must be based in or be able to relocate to Vienna and have a valid EU/Austria work permit.

What you will do
- Develop the core of a new storytelling app using Kotlin to enable personalized print product creation.
- Design and develop new features and REST APIs in collaboration with frontend, product designers, and managers.
- Proactively identify and communicate technical improvements for the team's workflow.
- Provide and receive constructive feedback to foster an environment of constant improvement.
- Share backend engineering expertise with the wider team.
Requirements
- 2+ years of experience developing backend applications.
- Strong knowledge of JVM-based languages (Kotlin or Java).
- Experience designing and developing REST APIs and writing automated unit tests with mocks.
- Proficiency with SQL databases (PostgreSQL, MySQL, MariaDB) and NoSQL databases (Redis, DynamoDB, MongoDB).
- Valid work permit for the EU/Austria or a Computer Science degree required for work permit application.
- Ability to be based in or relocate to Vienna, Austria.
Nice to have
- Experience with AWS (S3, SQS, ECS, ECR, SES, RDS, CloudWatch, ElasticCache, CloudFront), Docker, GitLab, and Datadog.
- Experience with migrations from monolith to microservice infrastructure.
- Knowledge of statistical methods or machine learning algorithms.
- Kotlin-specific expertise in Coroutines, Ktor, or KMP.
- CI/CD experience and history of working with cross-functional teams.
