Telematics Mobile App Developer (Android)

What you will do

• Build and maintain Android-first and iOS apps that detect vehicle journeys, record them in the background, and upload data for insurance telematics scoring.
• Develop background journey recording with foreground services, Activity Recognition, geofencing, CoreLocation, background modes, and mobile power-management handling.
• Capture GPS, accelerometer, gyroscope, and BLE data; assemble journeys, package sensor streams, and upload them reliably.
• Maintain the customer-facing app, including dashboards, journey history, maps, mileage, discounts, onboarding, and login.
• Support white-label builds, staged releases, production monitoring, and end-to-end ticket ownership through investigation, implementation, documentation, QA coordination, and release follow-up.
• Use device logs, traces, ANR reports, crash reports, and targeted logging to diagnose issues and improve long-lived mobile applications.

Requirements

• Strong commercial Android development experience with Kotlin, Coroutines, Flow, Jetpack Compose, dependency injection, local persistence, and an HTTP client.
• Hands-on experience with background execution, including foreground services, WorkManager, AlarmManager, broadcast receivers, and failure modes where background work stops silently.
• Practical knowledge of Android runtime permissions, especially background location permissions.
• Ability and willingness to maintain the iOS app using Swift.
• Experience writing concurrency tests and debugging lifecycle, race-condition, restart, ANR, and crash issues from evidence.
• Practical fluency with AI coding agents, including deliberate prompting and critical review of generated code.

Nice to have

• Experience with Swift, SwiftUI/UIKit, and CoreLocation-based background execution.
• Background in telematics, IoT, fitness or activity tracking, navigation, or other unattended battery-sensitive applications.
• Experience with BLE, location and sensor fusion, GPS accuracy, and noisy-signal filtering.
• Experience with Firebase Crashlytics, Analytics, Remote Config, and production telemetry.
