TL;DR

PhD Position (Science/Instrumentation): Developing next-generation superconducting integral field units (IFUs) for terahertz astronomy using Microwave Kinetic Inductance Detectors (MKIDs) with an accent on scaling technology to multi-pixel systems. Focus on the full development cycle from detector design and microfabrication to system integration and astronomical observations in Chile.

Location: Must be based in or relocate to Delft, Netherlands

Salary: €3,204 - €4,051 gross per month

What you will do

• Develop superconducting IFUs for terahertz astronomy based on MKID technology.
• Scale single-spaxel technology to multi-pixel IFUs consisting of 3,000 to 15,000 MKIDs.
• Execute the full development cycle including detector design, microfabrication, characterization, and system integration.
• Participate in the commissioning and science verification of the TIFUUN system at the ASTE telescope in Chile.
• Collaborate with an international team including researchers at SRON and partners in Japan.

Requirements

• Background in Physics, Electrical Engineering, or Astronomy.
• Experience with device fabrication in cleanroom facilities.
• Familiarity with the environment of the Atacama Desert.
• Relocation to the Netherlands is required.
• English proficiency required for communication and writing scientific articles.
