About the Company

We are launching a new online lending brand in South Africa.

The project is backed by an international FinTech team with more than 10 years of experience in online lending. We are building a modern digital lending business from the ground up and establishing a full-scale Collections department covering Pre-Collection, Soft Collection, Soft+ Collection, and Hard Collection.

We are looking for an experienced Head of Collections who will take ownership of the operational side of collections, build the team and processes from scratch, and drive portfolio performance.

About the Role

The Head of Collections is responsible for leading all collections functions, delivering collection targets, developing portfolio strategies, and ensuring efficient operational processes across the department.

This role involves building the collections function from the ground up, managing a distributed team, collaborating with cross-functional departments, and continuously improving operational performance through data-driven decision-making.

Key Responsibilities

Lead all collection functions: Pre-Collection, Soft Collection, Soft+ Collection, and Hard Collection.
Ensure achievement of key performance indicators, including collection rates, default levels, and portfolio profitability.
Develop collection strategies for different debt portfolios and projects.
Conduct regular performance and motivation meetings with team leaders and supervisors.
Review, optimize, and automate collection processes and workflows.
Monitor portfolio coverage, customer treatment strategies, and allocation logic.
Ensure timely access revocation and compliance procedures when employees leave the company.
Oversee operational documentation related to corporate wallets, payroll, and incentive payments.
Review security screening results for new hires.
Collaborate closely with Risk, Operations, Customer Service, Product, and other internal departments.

Requirements

Must Have

At least 2 years of experience managing a Collections department.
Strong understanding of portfolio segmentation across Pre-Collection, Soft Collection, and Hard Collection.
Solid knowledge of key collections KPIs, including collection rate, default rate, profitability by vintage, contact rate, and portfolio coverage.
Hands-on experience with CRM systems, dialers, and telephony platforms.
Experience managing distributed remote teams.
Proven track record of implementing collection processes, scripts, and operational procedures.

Nice to Have

Experience building a Collections department from scratch.
Previous experience in Microfinance (MFI), FinTech, or online lending.
Experience automating collection processes.
Experience managing multiple collections functions simultaneously.
