TL;DR

Applied Scientist (AI): Building and optimizing machine learning models and AI systems to improve healthcare access with an accent on prediction, ranking, and NLP. Focus on turning ambiguous operational problems into production-ready AI solutions and ensuring rigorous evaluation of real-world impact.

Location: Hybrid (San Francisco or Menlo Park, CA). Must be in the office Monday through Thursday.

Compensation: $180K – $260K + Equity

What you will do

• Translate ambiguous healthcare and operational problems into well-posed ML, AI, ranking, or LLM-based tasks.
• Develop and iterate on models using traditional ML, deep learning, and NLP approaches.
• Design honest offline and online evaluations that are predictive of real-world impact.
• Conduct rigorous error analysis to identify label leakage, selection bias, and confounding.
• Collaborate with ML engineering to productionize models and define readiness requirements.
• Partner with clinicians and leadership to validate assumptions and explain model tradeoffs and limitations.

Requirements

• Proven experience building and shipping ML/AI models for real-world production use cases.
• Proficiency in Python and standard ML tooling (PyTorch, scikit-learn, NumPy, pandas, Hugging Face).
• MS or PhD in a quantitative field (CS, Statistics, ML, Applied Math, etc.) or exceptional equivalent experience.
• Experience working with messy real-world datasets and applying statistical reasoning.
• Must be based in the Bay Area and able to work from the office Monday through Thursday.

Nice to have

• Depth in uncertainty quantification, causal inference, or healthcare AI.
• Experience working with healthcare data (claims, EHR, clinical notes) and HIPAA-aware systems.
• Experience in a fast-moving startup environment.
• Previous collaboration with clinicians or high-stakes domain experts.
