TL;DR
PhD Position eXtended Reality for Inclusive Automated Vehicle Interaction (eXtended Reality): Developing accessible VR simulators and inclusive external human-machine interfaces for safer automated vehicle interactions with vulnerable road users, with an accent on experimental research, decision-making models, and disability-inclusive design. Focus on designing and conducting VR experiments, analyzing behavioral and physiological data, and validating eHMI concepts through real-world testing.
Location: Delft, Netherlands; relocation to the Netherlands may be required.
Salary: €3,059–€3,881 gross per month, increasing from the first to the fourth year.

What you will do
- Develop a theoretical framework for automated vehicle and vulnerable road user interactions and define criteria for inclusive external human-machine interfaces.
- Design accessible virtual and extended reality simulators for people with disabilities.
- Plan and conduct VR experiments, collect data, and model decision-making processes.
- Evaluate inclusive eHMI designs through real-world testing.
- Collaborate with PhD researchers on related interdisciplinary projects.
- Publish research in scientific journals and present findings at conferences and stakeholder workshops.
Requirements
- Master’s degree in Human-Computer Interaction, Transportation, Computer Science, or a closely related field.
- Experience with VR technologies and developing XR applications using Unity or Unreal Engine.
- Strong experimental skills covering experiment design, setup, execution, and data collection.
- Strong programming and analytical skills, including Python or C#, statistics, and qualitative and quantitative analysis.
- Good English communication and academic writing skills.

- Relevant prior research or professional experience.
