TL;DR
Senior Prototype Fabricator (Sheet Metal/Welding): Building and modifying prototypes, mock-ups, fixtures, and low-volume development assemblies from engineering drawings, sketches, and 3D CAD models with an accent on sheet metal forming, welding, machining, and assembly. Focus on selecting fabrication methods, solving manufacturability challenges, verifying dimensional accuracy, and completing projects from concept through final assembly.

What you will do
- Fabricate prototype parts, assemblies, mock-ups, and test fixtures from engineering drawings, sketches, design concepts, and 3D CAD models.
- Set up and operate press brakes, welders, mills, lathes, drill presses, and other model shop equipment.
- Perform sheet metal layout, forming, bending, fitting, cutting, finishing, welding, and assembly.
- Determine fabrication sequences, tooling requirements, and manufacturing methods with minimal supervision.
- Design and build fixtures, tooling, jigs, and fabrication aids for prototype development.
- Collaborate with design and engineering teams on manufacturability, cost estimates, troubleshooting, inspections, and corrective actions.
Requirements
- 10+ years of experience in prototype fabrication, model shops, tool rooms, sheet metal fabrication, or product development.
- Demonstrated experience building one-off prototypes and low-volume development parts.
- Extensive hands-on experience fabricating and welding steel, stainless steel, and aluminum components, including MIG, TIG, and spot welding.
- Working knowledge of CAD systems such as Creo, NX, SolidWorks, CATIA, or similar platforms, plus familiarity with CNC/CAM processes.
- Ability to interpret engineering drawings, GD&T, blueprints, assembly documentation, and dimensional inspection requirements.
- Ability to complete projects independently, prioritize multiple projects, meet aggressive schedules, and mentor junior model makers.
Nice to have
- Journeyman Design Model Maker qualification or equivalent trade experience.
- Experience in product development, engineering development, rapid prototyping, additive manufacturing, or rapid tooling.
- Experience designing and building prototype fixtures, tooling, and support equipment.
- Experience working with plastics, wood, composites, and castings in addition to metals.
