Senior Engineering Manager (Backend)

Location: Hybrid role based in Helsinki, Oulu or Tampere, Finland, with in-person collaboration a few days per week.

What you will do

• Lead, mentor, and grow a high-performing engineering team.
• Drive the technical vision and delivery of cross-functional projects with Product, Design, Data Science, and global teams.
• Own planning, scoping, and delivery of robust, scalable backend solutions.
• Guide architectural decisions, evaluate technical trade-offs, and unblock engineering work.
• Improve engineering processes and promote technical excellence and continuous improvement.
• Partner with recruiting as the hiring manager and translate scientific concepts into technical roadmaps.

Requirements

• At least 6 years of software engineering experience and 3 years of people management experience.
• Technical degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or equivalent professional experience.
• Experience shipping and maintaining consumer-facing mobile applications or backend services at scale.
• Strong knowledge of agile development, team process improvement, communication, delegation, and project management.
• Experience hiring and building high-performing, inclusive engineering teams.
• Strong people leadership skills and a commitment to sustainable work-life balance.

Nice to have

• Experience working asynchronously across distributed teams, time zones, and cultures.
• Experience collaborating with data scientists or researchers and integrating machine learning models.
• Familiarity with digital signal processing, scientific computing, or algorithm development.
