TL;DR

Principal Flight Software Engineer (C++/Python): Leading the development of the flight software stack for the Nyx orbital vehicle with an accent on high-reliability systems and real-time operation. Focus on driving architectural decisions, overseeing HIL testing, and integrating software with GNC and avionics subsystems.

Location: Munich, Germany. Relocation assistance and visa sponsorship provided

Company

The Exploration Company is developing Nyx, a modular and reusable space orbital vehicle designed for cargo and potentially human transport.

What you will do

  • Lead and mentor a high-performing team of flight software engineers.
  • Own the technical roadmap, architecture, and modularity of the spacecraft software across avionics and vehicle subsystems.
  • Set standards for code quality, simulation fidelity, and system robustness.
  • Develop safe and efficient real-time spacecraft operations using modern C++ (17+) and Python.
  • Oversee the development of test infrastructure, including unit, integration, and Hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) testing.
  • Collaborate with systems engineering, GNC, propulsion, and mission operations to validate end-to-end behavior.

Requirements

  • Strong proficiency in modern C++ (C++17 or newer) and Python.
  • Experience with real-time systems, embedded development, or spacecraft software.
  • Proven ability to take ownership of complex technical problems and drive them to resolution.
  • Familiarity with software testing methodologies and simulation tools.
  • Good understanding of mathematics and physics.
  • Must be based in or willing to relocate to Munich, Germany

Nice to have

  • Knowledge of safety-critical software and familiarity with RTOS.
  • Understanding of communication protocols such as TCP/IP, UART, and CAN Bus.
  • Experience with automotive or flight software frameworks.
  • Background in orbital mechanics or the space mission lifecycle.
  • Experience with industry standards such as AUTOSAR, ECSS, or DO-178.
