Описание вакансии
TL;DR
Lab Automation Intern (Python/Robotics): Developing and maintaining automated liquid-handling protocols and hardware integrations for an AI-driven biology lab with an accent on software-hardware interfacing and instrument driver development. Focus on reverse-engineering instrument communication, writing Python-based control software, and optimizing high-throughput experimental workflows.
Location: On-site in Lausanne, Switzerland
Company
builds the infrastructure that gives AI agents access to the physical world to autonomously run biology experiments.
What you will do
- Build and run automated liquid-handling protocols on robots (Hamilton STAR and others) using Python and tools like PyLabRobot/PyHamilton.
- Develop instrument drivers, integrations, and tooling to control hardware and manage data flow through LabOS.
- Reverse-engineer instrument communication by capturing traffic with Wireshark or USB/serial sniffers.
- Support work-cell operation and maintenance, including loading runs, calibration, and troubleshooting hardware jams.
- Run tests on new protocols and instruments and maintain detailed documentation of layouts and fixes.
- Assist with physical setup, including wiring devices and prepping reagents for automated runs.
Requirements
- Bachelor's or Master's degree in engineering, robotics, mechatronics, computer science, bioengineering, or a related field.
- Solid Python skills: Ability to build drivers, structure readable code, work with APIs and Git.
- AI-native workflow: Proficiency in using coding agents (e.g., Claude Code) to accelerate software development.
- Generalist maker mindset with an interest in troubleshooting software, electronics, and mechanics.
- Location: Must be based in or be able to work on-site in Lausanne, Switzerland.
- Commitment: Full-time internship for a minimum of 3 months.
Nice to have
- Maker/hacker experience with 3D printing, CAD, soldering, or microcontrollers (Arduino, Raspberry Pi, ESP32).
- Experience with machining or robotics.
- Contributions to open-source projects like PyLabRobot, PyHamilton, or Opentrons.
Culture & Benefits
- Hands-on role where software meets hardware and wet lab biology.
- Opportunity to contribute to the era of agentic science and high-throughput biology.
- Fast-paced, growth-oriented environment working with cutting-edge AI and automation stacks.
