Environmental Health Officer

TL;DR

Environmental Health Officer (WASH): Undertaking rapid Environmental Health needs assessments and implementing emergency WASH responses with an accent on water supply schemes rehabilitation, sanitation facilities construction, and water quality monitoring. Focus on preparing engineering designs, supervising construction works, coordinating with partners, and ensuring compliance with standards and guidelines.

What you will do

• Conduct rapid and detailed EH needs assessments, prepare reports, engineering designs, bills of quantities, and budget estimates.
• Supervise construction and rehabilitation of water facilities (boreholes, wells, rainwater systems) and sanitation infrastructure.
• Monitor water trucking, treatment, quality testing (chlorine residuals), and ensure adherence to WHO guidelines.
• Coordinate with government offices, IRC teams, contractors, and stakeholders for efficient emergency responses.
• Train water committees, monitors, and user associations on scheme management, maintenance, and sustainability.
• Produce progress reports, manage procurement, labor, materials, and ensure projects meet schedule, budget, and quality standards.

Requirements

• Good command of spoken and written English
• Degree/diploma in Water Resource/Hydraulics/Environmental Engineering with WASH and community mobilization experience.
• 2+ years experience (first degree), 5+ years (diploma), or 1+ year (post-graduate) in water supply systems construction/rehabilitation.
• Practical experience in rural water schemes (springs, wells, hand pumps), supervising construction sites, budget management.
• Knowledge of SPHERE standards, project cycle management; experience with government partners preferred.
• Basic computer skills, engineering software (AutoCAD, EPANET); flexible for tight conditions.

• Experience with large-scale motorized boreholes.
• Leading labor and materials at sites.
