Backend Engineer (Python)

TL;DR

Backend Engineer (Python/ClickHouse): Building and operating the infrastructure for a managed ClickHouse service with an accent on database lifecycle operations, Linux internals, and async-first Python. Focus on scaling distributed systems, solving production issues across the stack, and automating database orchestration.

Location: Berlin-based, hybrid (office attendance required 3 times per week)

What you will do

• Design and maintain Python backend services using FastAPI and asyncio to manage the ClickHouse service lifecycle.
• Build and optimize CI/CD pipelines using Buildkite and GitHub Actions to ensure reliable code shipping.
• Troubleshoot production issues from application code down to Linux OS internals and system behavior.
• Collaborate on technical planning and contribute to the product roadmap within a focused team.
• Implement type-checked, well-tested code and conduct thorough peer reviews.
• Integrate AI coding tools into the daily development workflow to accelerate delivery.

Requirements

• Production-grade Python skills with expertise in async patterns (asyncio, aiohttp).
• Strong understanding of relational and analytical database internals.
• Deep Linux knowledge, specifically systemd, process management, and filesystem internals (Fedora preferred).
• Proven experience building and maintaining CI/CD delivery pipelines.
• Proficiency in automated testing, including unit, integration, and system tests.
• Fluent English (written and verbal).
• Must be based in Berlin and available for hybrid work (3 days per week in office).

Nice to have

• Operational knowledge of ClickHouse, query optimization, or contributions to the project.
• Ability to read and contribute to database engine code in C++ or C.
• Cloud infrastructure experience (AWS, GCP, Azure) with Terraform or similar IaC tools.
• PostgreSQL operational experience.
• Knowledge of software and network security.
