TL;DR

Research Engineer Intern (ML/Robotics): Developing and training machine learning models for autonomous vehicle prediction and planning with an accent on model ensembling and simulation behavior. Focus on bridging the gap between open-loop training and closed-loop simulation performance, and building data-driven evaluation metrics for agent behavior.

Location: Austin, TX. Must be authorized to work in the U.S. Remote work and relocation sponsorship are not available.

What you will do

  • Implement and evaluate model ensembling strategies using Python and PyTorch to improve closed-loop simulation performance.
  • Run controlled experiments to analyze the correlation between open-loop metrics and real-world driving stability.
  • Design evaluation functions and quantitative metrics for ML-driven traffic agents in a C++ simulation pipeline.
  • Develop algorithms to optimize agent trajectories based on aggressiveness, interaction density, and route fidelity.
  • Collaborate with senior researchers to prototype theoretical concepts from academic papers into safety-critical systems.

Requirements

  • Pursuing a Master’s or PhD in Computer Science, Robotics, ML, or Applied Mathematics with graduation between Winter 2026 and Spring 2027.
  • Strong foundation in deep learning, reinforcement learning, computer vision, or probabilistic modeling.
  • Proficiency in Python and deep learning frameworks (PyTorch, TensorFlow).
  • Authorized to work in the U.S.
  • Ability to read and implement algorithms from academic research papers.

Nice to have

  • Basic familiarity or willingness to learn C++.
