TL;DR

Research Engineer / Research Scientist (AI): Developing foundational technology for embedding retrieval and vector store architectures with an accent on grounding, relevance, and adaptive reasoning. Focus on designing new embedding training objectives and integrating retrieval systems into frontier models.

Location: Hybrid in San Francisco, CA (3 days per week in office)

Salary: $445K – $555K + Equity

What you will do

• Develop embedding models and retrieval systems optimized for grounding, relevance, and adaptive reasoning.
• Build end-to-end infrastructure for training, evaluating, and integrating embeddings into frontier models.
• Drive innovation in dense, sparse, and hybrid representation techniques and metric learning.
• Collaborate with Pretraining and Inference teams to integrate retrieval throughout the model lifecycle.
• Contribute to the long-term vision of AI systems with memory and knowledge access capabilities.

Requirements

• Experience leading high-performance teams in ML infrastructure or foundational research.
• Deep technical expertise in representation learning, embedding models, or vector retrieval systems.
• Familiarity with transformer-based LLMs and how embedding spaces interact with language model objectives.
• Research experience in contrastive learning, supervised/unsupervised embedding learning, or metric learning.
• Track record of building and scaling large machine learning systems and embedding pipelines.
• Must be based in or able to relocate to San Francisco, CA.
