TL;DR

(Senior) Lunar Scientist: Contribute to the scientific definition, planning, and execution of lunar rover and lander missions with an accent on geological and operational mapping, terrain analysis, and surface activity planning. Focus on integrating remote-sensing datasets, assessing hazards for safe rover mobility, and aligning science objectives with engineering and operational constraints.

What you will do

  • Support science target selection, surface activity planning, and traverse design for rover missions, translating analyses into operational guidance.
  • Develop lunar geological and operational maps by integrating imagery, spectral datasets, topographic models, and illumination data.
  • Assess terrain conditions, slopes, surface roughness, and hazards to ensure safe rover mobility and traverse planning.
  • Maintain science traceability, aligning objectives, observation requirements, and activities throughout mission design and operations.
  • Participate in pre-mission readiness activities, including field testing, simulation campaigns, and validation of operational constraints.
  • Collaborate with Mission Operations and Engineering teams during operations and contribute to post-mission data analysis and reporting.

Requirements

  • Master’s degree or Ph.D. in Planetary Science, Geology, Geophysics, or related field.
  • 5+ years of relevant experience in planetary or lunar science, including data analysis or mission participation.
  • Solid understanding of lunar geology, polar processes, and volatile stability indicators.
  • Experience with planetary remote-sensing datasets (imagery, topographic, thermal, spectral).
  • Experience with GIS and geospatial tools (e.g., QGIS, ArcGIS).
  • Strong technical communication and collaboration skills across science, engineering, and operations.

Nice to have

  • Experience with planetary mission operations, surface activity planning, or science-operations integration.
  • Experience in simulation campaigns, pre-mission readiness, or mission support roles.
  • Proficiency in Python or scripting for data analysis and automation.
  • Experience with digital elevation models (DEMs) and automated analysis workflows.
  • Record of peer-reviewed publications or mission-related deliverables.
