Import/Export Specialist

TL;DR

Import/Export Specialist (Trade Compliance): Ensuring company’s import and export activities comply with international trade laws and regulations, managing customs compliance, duties, export controls, sanctions, and documentation with an accent on product classification, transaction approvals, and risk minimization. Focus on monitoring regulatory changes, developing policies, supporting audits, and collaborating with brokers and internal teams.

Location: Alajuela, CR (onsite). This position is not eligible for visa sponsorship.

What you will do

• Ensure compliance with U.S. and international trade regulations including Customs, EAR, and sanctions.
• Classify products using HTS and ECCN, determine country of origin, valuation, and duties.
• Review and approve import/export transactions and documentation.
• Monitor global trade law changes, maintain compliance with agencies like CBP, BIS, OFAC.
• Develop and enforce trade compliance policies, provide training to Supply Chain, Logistics, Sales, Finance.
• Identify risks, support disclosures, audits, and process improvements with brokers and counsel.

Requirements

• English proficient.
• Bachelor’s degree in International Trade, Supply Chain, Business or equivalent experience.
• 3+ years in trade compliance, import/export, or customs operations.
• Experience with HTS classification, valuation, country of origin, export controls.
• Trade compliance systems (ERP, denied party screening tools).
• Excellent analytical, organizational, and communication skills.

Nice to have

• Customs Broker License or certifications (CCS, CUSECO, CTPAT).
• Experience with audits, disclosures, regulatory investigations.
• Knowledge of free trade agreements and duty drawbacks.
• Global manufacturing or distribution environment experience.
