Transformative AI Research Economist (AI)

Location: San Francisco, CA; hybrid policy requiring staff to be in an Anthropic office at least 25% of the time

What you will do

• Build macroeconomic models of transformative AI covering growth, labor markets, and income distribution.
• Develop and maintain scenario-based forecasting tools for GDP, productivity, and unemployment under different AI-capability trajectories.
• Ground macroeconomic projections in microeconomic data from the Anthropic Economic Index, including observed patterns of AI adoption and task transformation.
• Analyze economic governance and distributional outcomes under transformative-AI scenarios.
• Contribute to AI-powered economics research tools, Economic Index reports, research briefs, publications, policy briefs, and presentations.
• Build relationships with academic institutions, policy think tanks, and other research partners.

Requirements

• PhD in Economics or an exceptional candidate close to completion.
• Background in macroeconomics, growth theory, or public finance, ideally with exposure to task-based frameworks and labor economics.
• Research experience focused on transformative AI, macroeconomic modeling, structural estimation, forecasting, computational economics, or related areas.
• Proficiency in Python, Julia, or similar tools for computational economics, plus facility with AI coding agents.
• Ability to lead research projects from conception through publication, work on tight timelines, and communicate technical findings to diverse audiences.
• Visa sponsorship is available, subject to role and candidate eligibility.

Nice to have

• Experience with task-based approaches to technological change, agent-based modeling, large-scale simulation, income distribution, inequality, or large language models in research workflows.
• Experience publishing research, policy briefs, or presenting findings to external stakeholders.
