What you will do

• Research and develop open-source models to decarbonise the energy system.
• Build, extend, and maintain quantitative models and data pipelines using Python.
• Analyze unique energy datasets, including smart meter data and RCTs.
• Collaborate with economists and policy experts to shape research and drive real-world impact.
• Contribute to open-source tools, data, and published research.
• Present findings internally and at conferences.

Requirements

• Work format: Hybrid in London, UK.
• Strong understanding of energy systems (electricity grids, markets, balancing).
• Experience building quantitative models (optimisation, simulation, statistical, machine learning).
• Comfort working with messy, large-scale real-world data (geospatial, household).
• Fluency in Python and adherence to software development practices (git, testing, code review).
• Proactive curiosity and focus on real-world impact.

Nice to have

• Experience with open-source energy systems modelling frameworks (PyPSA, Calliope).
• Familiarity with demand flexibility, electrification, or smart meter data.
• Understanding of international energy system differences.
• SQL and cloud-based data tools (GCP, BigQuery, dbt).
• Experience deploying and monitoring models in production.
• Experience contributing to open-source projects or publishing research.
