Engineering Manager - Search (LLM)

TL;DR

Engineering Manager (Search): Leading a squad responsible for foundational customer search components with an accent on search infrastructure, LLM-powered interfaces, and service reliability. Location: Must be based in or able to commute to Berlin, Germany (Hybrid 2 days/week)

What you will do

• Lead and grow a high-performing squad, managing performance and career development.
• Drive technical strategy for search infrastructure, including Conversational Search and LLM-powered interfaces.
• Ensure reliable sprint execution and cross-squad dependency management.
• Maintain service reliability through monitoring, alerting, and incident response.
• Partner with Product and Data Science to run experiments and measure relevance improvements.
• Foster a culture of operational excellence and blameless post-mortems.

Requirements

• Strong people leadership experience in mentoring and building productive, inclusive teams.
• Deep understanding of search fundamentals like inverted indexes, vector search, and query parsing.
• Technical fluency in backend development (Go, Java, or Python).
• Experience with high-throughput, low-latency systems and operational maturity.
• Ability to lead teams in delivering high-quality, maintainable services.
• Must be able to work from the Berlin campus 2 days per week.

Nice to have

• Experience with OpenSearch or Elasticsearch.
• Experience with vector databases such as Qdrant.
• Practical knowledge of A/B testing and relevance evaluation metrics like NDCG and MRR.
