TL;DR
Lead Environment Artist (Unreal Engine/Gamedev): Creating and refining game environments, modular assets, lighting setups, atmospheric effects, materials, and shaders for a Japanese game with an accent on visual storytelling, scalability, and real-time performance. Focus on designing gameplay spaces, integrating and profiling assets in Unreal Engine, solving technical constraints, and mentoring junior artists.

Location: Primarily on-site at the Tokyo office, Japan

hirify.global develops Japanese games with a small, collaborative team of experienced game industry professionals.

What you will do

  • Conceptualize, create, and refine game environments that support gameplay and storytelling.
  • Populate levels with props, foliage, lighting, atmospheric effects, and other assets.
  • Design modular assets for scalable reuse while maintaining visual cohesion.
  • Use Unreal Engine to design levels, integrate assets, and profile performance.
  • Develop complex materials and shaders for surface details and visual effects.
  • Collaborate with designers, programmers, and producers while mentoring junior artists and setting quality benchmarks.

Requirements

  • Proven experience creating visually compelling game environments with strong composition, perspective, and spatial awareness.
  • Extensive experience with Unreal Engine, including level design, asset integration, and performance optimization.
  • Expertise with industry-standard tools such as Maya, Blender, Substance Suite, and ZBrush.
  • Strong portfolio featuring environments, gameplay spaces, optimized levels, and high-quality props.
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent, or 10 years of games industry experience; this qualification is required for the Japanese visa.
  • Ability to work primarily on-site at the Tokyo office; visa sponsorship is available.

Nice to have

  • Knowledge of modular design, LOD creation, texture atlasing, modern game development pipelines, and version control.
  • Knowledge of current real-time rendering and environment art trends.
  • Pre-existing Japanese language skills or willingness to learn.
