Cloud Engineering Specialist (VMware): Designing, building, and operating VMware-based private cloud infrastructure with an accent on compute, storage, and virtualisation architecture. Location: Hybrid (3 days in office), must be based in Manchester, Ipswich, or London, United Kingdom. SC Clearance eligibility is required for the role.

What you will do

• Design, build, and support VMware-based private cloud infrastructure.
• Contribute to High Level and Low Level Designs adhering to BT architecture and engineering standards.
• Operate and optimise compute and storage platforms, including performance, availability, and capacity planning.
• Troubleshoot and resolve complex, high-severity infrastructure issues.
• Work closely with network and security teams to integrate compute platforms with NSX and underlay networks.
• Contribute to automation and infrastructure-as-code initiatives to improve consistency and efficiency.

Requirements

• Strong operational and design expertise in VMware and compute infrastructure, with the ability to operate confidently in large-scale enterprise environments.
• Minimum 3 years in a hands-on infrastructure role (2nd and 3rd line support) AND 3+ years design experience.
• Proficiency in VMware vSphere, vCenter, and VMware Cloud Foundation.
• Experience with storage technologies (vSAN or equivalent) and producing High Level and Low Level Designs.
• Solid understanding of IP networking fundamentals and data centre infrastructure.
• SC Clearance eligibility is required for the role.

Nice to have

• Automation and scripting experience such as Ansible or Python.
• Experience with infrastructure-as-code approaches and exposure to private or hybrid cloud platforms.
• Familiarity with regulated or multi-tenant environments.
• Relevant professional certifications such as VMware VCP, Cisco CCNA/CCNP, or Microsoft MCSA.
