Backend Engineer (Java/Kotlin)

Location: Hybrid in Aveiro, Portugal (minimum 3 days per week in-office)

What you will do

• Scale services for a global product, ensuring platform stability.
• Participate in end-to-end development from initial architecture to production monitoring.
• Lead well-scoped backend projects with guidance from senior engineers.
• Collaborate cross-functionally with Product, Design, Analytics, and Operations.
• Improve the existing codebase by promoting disciplined software engineering practices.
• Refine application and distributed database performance.

Requirements

• 2+ years of experience developing production-level systems using Java, Kotlin, or similar Object-Oriented languages.
• 2+ years of experience working with relational databases (e.g., PostgreSQL, CockroachDB).
• Deep understanding of data structures and software design patterns.
• Commitment to writing readable code and proactive documentation.
• Strong sense of ownership and curiosity about the "why" behind features.
• BS or MS in Computer Science (or equivalent industry experience).
