Type 26 ICT Systems Engineer (Defence)

TL;DR

Type 26 ICT Systems Engineer (Defence): Support the deployment and testing of a communications system on the T26 Global Combat Ship with an accent on integrating the system with other support systems and ensuring its functionality. Focus on troubleshooting software and system issues, preparing documentation, and supporting acceptance trials.

Location: Primarily based in Glasgow, United Kingdom. Occasional travel required to Supplier Integration Facility in Fleet, Hampshire, Land Based Integration Facility in Portsmouth, Hampshire, and Rohde & Schwarz Plant in Teisnach, Germany.

What you will do

• Support the deployment and testing of the Rohde & Schwarz Communication System on the T26 platform.
• Troubleshoot software and system issues as they arise onboard the vessel.
• Support the Set to Work (STW) of various sub-systems incorporated by the communications installation.
• Prepare related software delivery documentation for approval by Senior Engineers.
• Support the execution of customer facing Harbour Acceptance Trials (HATs).
• Provide occasional support for uplift and integration activities at UK and German facilities.

Requirements

• Suitable qualifications in an ICT discipline, or relevant experience.
• Understand networking fundamentals and technologies: TCP/IP, LAN, SAN, Routers, Switches, Wireless Access Points, Firewalls.
• Experience deploying and/or administering VMware (or other hypervisor technologies), Windows server, domain services (AD, DNS, GPO, WSUS), and Linux RedHat/CentOS.
• Basic understanding of Public Key Infrastructure and certificates.
• Experience maintaining hardware (Servers, desktops, laptops, communication devices) and with application deployment, configuration, and testing.
• Ability to troubleshoot complex systems, read and interpret technical documentation, and work under own initiative or as part of a larger team.
• Active SC clearance, or ability and willingness to go through the vetting process to obtain SC clearance.

Nice to have

• Understand RDBMS databases: e.g. PostgresSQL, Microsoft SQL Server, Oracle.
• Experience writing and running test cases to meet customer acceptance criteria.
• Experience with software lifecycle management tools: e.g. JIRA, GIT, IBM Jazz.
• Experience writing technical documentation.
• Knowledge of serial communication technologies and protocols, Juniper/Cisco network devices, and military communication systems and standards.
• Experience of working in shipyard environments.
