Principal Software Engineer – Copilot Identity (AI)

Principal Software Engineer (AI): Defining and leading the strategy for authentication, authorization, and account systems across Copilot experiences with an accent on secure identity flows and defenses against emerging threats. Focus on backend engineering expertise, modern consumer identity protocols, and ability to balance risk and velocity.

Location: Redmond, United States. Starting January 26, 2026, MAI employees are expected to work from a designated Microsoft office at least four days a week if they live within 50 miles (U.S.) of that location.

Salary: USD $163,000 – $296,400 per year.

What you will do

• Define the end‑to‑end identity vision for consumer Copilot and MAI.
• Drive common authentication/SSO patterns and SDKs for Windows, Edge, web, iOS, and Android.
• Collaborate with product, engineering, security, privacy, and identity teams across Copilot, MAI and IDNA.
• Establish, monitor, and continuously improve key authentication metrics across Copilot and MAI.
• Define and document authentication patterns and requirements for AI-powered, agentic flows.
• Ship secure, well‑tested, maintainable code and frameworks that other teams can adopt quickly.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 8+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python OR equivalent experience.

Nice to have

• Master’s Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 12+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python OR Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 15+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python OR equivalent experience.
• Experience integrating with Microsoft Account, and familiarity with consumer identity features.
• Shipped identity flows and SDKs across multiple consumer client platforms (Windows, macOS, iOS, Android, web).
• Familiarity with consumer identity lifecycle management and privacy controls.
• Experience embedding privacy‑by‑design and meeting consumer compliance expectations for Copilot-class workloads.
• Track record mentoring senior engineers and driving adoption of platform standards across many product teams.
