Senior Software Engineer (Generative AI)

TL;DR

Senior Software Engineer (Generative AI): Driving the architecture and development of high-performance services that power generative AI features across Bing and Copilot with an accent on prompt engineering, C#-based service layers, and large-scale AI systems architecture. Focus on leading workgroup project plans, delivering new feature areas, and mentoring other engineers.

Location: Mountain View, United States. Starting January 26, 2026, employees are expected to work from the office at least four days per week if they live within a 50-mile commute of a designated Microsoft office in the U.S.

Salary: USD $158,400 – $258,000 per year (San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area).

What you will do

• Provide technical leadership for large language model-driven Generative Search projects.
• Drive the architecture and development of high-performance services for generative AI features.
• Lead efforts in prompt engineering and tuning.
• Guide workgroup project plans and delivery of new feature areas including web grounding, Search mode, answer cards, and generative UI.
• Lead by example and mentor other engineers to produce extensible and maintainable code.
• Serve as Designated Responsible Individual (DRI), monitoring systems for degradation, downtime, or interruptions.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 4+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including C#, JavaScript, and TypeScript OR equivalent experience.
• Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements.
• Pass the Microsoft Cloud background check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.

Nice to have

• Master’s Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 6+ years technical engineering experience OR Bachelor’s Degree AND 8+ years technical engineering experience.
• 2+ years of experience with C# and .NET development for high-performance, scalable backend services.
• 2+ years of experience with distributed systems, microservices architecture, or cloud-native development at scale.
• 2+ years of experience with AI/ML systems, large language models, or prompt engineering in production environments.
• 2+ years of experience with React or similar modern JavaScript frameworks.
