Backend Engineer

TL;DR

Backend Engineer (Backend): Developing and maintaining backend services and APIs that support premium features, creator tools, and user growth systems at scale with an accent on performance, scalability, and cross-functional collaboration. Location: Remote with the UK or Europe. Visa sponsorship is not available.

Salary: £50,000 - £60,000 (adjusted for location outside the UK)

What you will do

• Develop and maintain backend services and APIs for premium features, creator tools, and marketing integrations.
• Collaborate closely with Product, Design, and Digital Marketing teams to deliver features supporting commercial goals.
• Write clean, maintainable, and well-tested code following best engineering practices.
• Ensure backend services are secure, performant, and scalable.
• Participate in product discovery, ideation, and technical feasibility validation.
• Share knowledge and collaborate across engineering pods.

Requirements

• Experience with at least one backend language such as Ruby, PHP, Java, Go, or Node.js.
• Experience designing or maintaining REST and/or GraphQL APIs.
• Strong understanding of relational databases (Postgres, MySQL) and familiarity with NoSQL systems (Redis, ElasticSearch).
• Knowledge of distributed systems, queues, or event-driven architectures.
• Experience with performance optimization, caching, and scalability concepts.
• Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines and containerization technologies like Docker and Kubernetes.
• Comfortable working cross-functionally with product, design, and marketing teams.
• Must be located in the UK or Europe with no visa sponsorship available.

Nice to have

• Experience with Ruby on Rails.
• Knowledge of payments, billing systems, or subscription models.
• Understanding of authentication, identity management, or account value systems.
• Experience with search technologies like ElasticSearch or Meilisearch.
• Exposure to growth engineering, funnel optimization, or experimentation frameworks.
• Passion for games and modding ecosystems.
