🦄 Description
One Man Studio partners with major AAA teams to ship real-time content. This is a senior, hands-on, fully remote role focused on finishing client-approved VFX blockouts into final, game-ready effects at AAA shipping quality. You will work across character and environment pods, owning lookdev, performance, and integration in Unreal while collaborating with Leads, Principals, Tech Art, Design, and the client.
🚀 Responsibilities
• Turn blockouts into shippable VFX using Niagara, materials, shaders, flipbooks, meshes, decals
• Lock timing, silhouettes, color/value and screen economy to ensure readability and style under gameplay lighting
• Integrate VFX through Blueprints, Anim Notifies, gameplay events; author reusable Niagara Systems/Emitters
• Build performant shader graphs with parameters for tuning (erosion, dissolve, fresnel, distortion, lightning, trails)
• Profile and optimize using stat GPU, stat Niagara, shader complexity; manage bounds, LODs, culling, tick rates and scalability
• Own areas such as character combat/abilities, hits/reactions, traversal, ambient/facility FX, destruction, environmental atmospherics
• Maintain libraries, naming conventions, Niagara templates; contribute tools and validators with Tech Art
• Collaborate regularly with cross-discipline teams to ensure quality
• Provide documentation and tunables so systems are reusable by other pods
📚 Required Skills
• 5+ years creating real-time VFX for games; shipped at least one AA/AAA title or equivalent live product
• Strong Unreal Engine VFX skills: Niagara, material editor, Blueprints, Sequencer
• Ability to author flipbooks, mesh-based FX, ribbons/trails, decals, light/mesh integration
• Proven eye for timing, shape language, color/value and gameplay readability
• Comfortable profiling and hitting performance budgets
• Clear communication and reliability in a remote, multi-time-zone team
👍 Nice to Have
• Houdini for VFX meshes, flipbooks and utility tools
• Fluid/volumetric approaches and stylized FX skills
• Basic C++ or Python for tooling; Niagara data interfaces experience
