Principal Software Engineer (AI)

Location: Foster City, California, United States; hybrid workplace

Base salary: $340,000–$492,000 per year. Additional compensation may include Amazon RSUs, Zoox Stock Appreciation Rights, and a sign-on bonus.

Zoox is developing a fully autonomous vehicle fleet and the supporting mobility-as-a-service ecosystem for urban environments.

What you will do

• Set the technical direction for machine learning development for the future of the onboard Planner.
• Develop machine learning models using imitation learning, reinforcement learning, and model scaling.
• Drive improvements to ML metrics, data systems, and training frameworks.
• Develop methods to integrate Zoox Foundation Models into the ML Planner.
• Mentor ML developers and collaborate across Autonomy Software, Foundation Models, Perception, Simulation, System Design, and Safety Validation.
• Prototype approaches that influence the long-term technical direction of multiple organizations and address autonomous driving in complex urban environments.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s, master’s, or doctoral degree in computer science or a related field.
• Proven technical leadership experience in large-scale AI organizations.
• Significant experience training and deploying deep learning models to production.
• Fluency in C++ or Python with a basic understanding of C++.
• Extensive programming and algorithm design experience, strong mathematics skills, and 10+ years of experience.

Nice to have

• Publications in machine learning or robotics conferences or journals.
• Experience with prediction and planning for autonomous vehicles.
