Senior Research Engineer (Computer Vision)

Location: Hybrid in Lisbon - Carnaxide or Porto (VB), Portugal

What you will do

• Define the applied-research strategy for face recognition, image quality, anti-spoofing, and biometric capture pipelines.
• Establish best practices across data acquisition, annotation, dataset governance, model training, deployment, monitoring, and retirement.
• Assess accuracy, robustness, bias, security, and privacy while ensuring compliance with the EU AI Act, GDPR, ICAO, ISO, and NIST standards.
• Influence product and technology roadmaps, collaborate with Device Management and Services teams, resolve complex technical challenges, and handle escalated SDK support requests.
• Ensure secure software lifecycle and algorithm governance practices, contribute to European projects, and generate patents, publications, and trade secrets.
• Mentor the next generation of researchers.

Requirements

• 5+ years of experience in computer vision, machine learning, or related fields in industry or public research institutions.
• Proven experience delivering innovative research that became production-ready solutions.
• Deep expertise in deep learning for image-based tasks, strong Python skills, and hands-on model training experience.
• Adaptability and independence, comfort with ambiguity and working across different tools, machines, and technologies.
• Strong communication skills and a passion for mentoring.

Nice to have

• PhD in computer vision or a related field.
• Publications or academic research experience.
• Biometrics experience; internal training is provided.
• Software engineering and C# skills.
